Abstract

This work aims to demonstrate to students and teachers that "physical," "in-person" experimentation is not the only way to contextualize the relationship between science and everyday life. Today, it is possible to go beyond the laboratory to "experience" chemistry; free educational materials are available online. With a computer and a simple click, one can access problem-based videos, hypermedia, WebQuests, podcasts, and other online visualization tools and simulations that allow students to test hypotheses using their prior knowledge. The purpose of this work is to disseminate educational materials for chemistry teaching developed using information and communication technologies (ICT) by the SEMENTE group. While such initiatives are typically viewed as supplements to standard school activities, this project utilized two distinct learning environments: a formal one (the classroom), supporting teachers and students at the *Ginásio Pernambucano* State High School in Recife (PE); and a non-formal one—*Espaço Ciência* in Olinda (PE)—to engage a diverse audience, regardless of their formal schooling background. The digital materials used in this project were created at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco’s Department of Chemistry by a group of instructors and students from the SEMENTE group (System for Developing Teaching Materials and Strategies Supported by Technology). Disseminating these materials provided students in the formal setting and visitors to the non-formal learning space with educational experiences linked to their daily lives, thereby offering them a more contextualized teaching-learning process. This work also contributed to improving the materials produced by the SEMENTE research group.
